The events listed have been reported in the public domain or to cruisejunkie by passengers or crew members onboard.  The list is by no means comprehensive.  For that reason it is necessary to be cautious in drawing conclusions from the potentially limited data.  Keep in mind that some companies may be more transparent than others about things that go wrong; conversely, some companies may be better at concealing events and thereby project an appearance that is inaccurate.  With that said, the following list is still interesting, as are the patterns when viewed separately by ship.

Holiday WKRG in Mobile reports the CDC is looking into an outbreak blamed for making 22 of 686 crew (3.21%) and 121 of 1548 passengers (7.82%) sick onboard the ship, which returned this morning from a 5 day cruise to Cozumel.

Carnival Spirit The ship reported that 8 of 931 (0.86%) crew and 116 of 2205  (5.26%) passengers had reported ill on a 7 day Alaska cruise from Vancouver to Whittier (13-20 June).

Carnival Glory A passenger on the 14 - 21 April cruise writes that there was an outbreak of illness of unknown size -- In my family alone five us came down sick.  This happened within hours of the first person getting sick ... I tried to find out info and was offered nothing but a "politician's answers."  They would say things such as rough seas, etc.  We all had to fill out CDC forms and were quarantined to our cabin the rest of the  trip.  We also came across about 6 others that had this same experience.

Carnival Liberty
The Miami Herald and other media report that some passengers complained of gastrointestinal illness.  The cruise line said it didn't know how many were ill, but that it was fewer than 2 percent of the 3100 passengers onboard -- that'd be less than 62.  He further said that the number of illnesses on this voyage were in the normal range for a vessel that size.

The ship reported that 116 of 1166  (9.94%) crew and 429 of 2804 (15.3%) passengers had reported ill with one week remaining in the cruise.  The cruise begin in Civitavecchia on 3 November and ends in Port Everglades on 19 November.   Symptoms were consistent with gastrointestinal illness (e.g., norovirus) .  Additional cleaning staff and staff from the Vessel Sanitation Program of the CDC will board the ship in Phillipsburg (Sint Maarten) on 16 November.

Carnival Liberty
According to those onboard, many passengers (up to one-third) contracted gastrointestinal illness during the cruise 12 day cruise ending today in Civitavecchia.  By the end of the cruise, all the dishes and silverware had been removed from the buffets and passengers had to be handed their plates with their food selections by the kitchen staff.  Half way through the cruise, Carnival employees began scrubbing down all common area surfaces such as outdoor furniture, decks and walls while wearing masks and gloves.  The crew all wore gloves to handle "sign and sail" cards, etc.

Carnival Victory
Many reports have been received from passengers on the March 26 - April 2 cruise (Eastern Caribbean from Miami) indicating a gastrointestinal illness outbreak.  One passenger was told by the ship's infirmary that over 200 people had been treated for the Norwalk virus by day 5.  There have been no reports yet by the CDC.

The CDC reports that 78 passengers (3.38%) reported ill during the February 21-26 cruise.

The CDC reports that 89 of 1,647 passengers (5.26%) and 30 of 693 crew members (4.33%) reported  ill during the February 21 - 26 cruise to/from Jacksonville, FL.  SECOND CRUISE IN A ROW WITH OUTBREAK  (Several passenger wrote and estimated the number ill were at least double CDC's numbers)

The CDC reports that 89 of 1,692 passengers (5.26%) and 35 of 688 crew members (5.09%) reported  ill during the February 17 - 21 cruise to/from Jacksonville, FL.

Carnival Miracle
Two days after returning from a 7 day cruise ending January 30, a 21 year old man died.  His family filed a class action suit agaist Carnival Cruise Lines (reported by the Sun Sentinel on January 21, 2006) claiming that several passengers developed flu-like symptoms from consuming food or water contaminated with the Norovirus.  The suit further identifies the cause of death as "norovirus infection and complications thereof".

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 328 passengers and 20 crew have been sickened with what appears to be Norwalk-like virus since the second day at sea on this five day cruise to the Caribbean from Galveston.  A passenger reports that the nurse told her the last night of the cruise that the number was well over 600.

Carnival Cruise Line reported an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness that affected at least 5% of passengers on the 5-day sailing from New Orleans ending October 16.  A total of 97 passengers and 53 crew expereinced symptoms consistent with Norwalk-like virus.

A health outbreak reported -- 4 passengers (.24%) and 23 crew members (3.35%) reported ill.

102 passengers and 10 were ill with a gastrointestinal illness.  Clinical presentation of the illness is consistent with a noroviral outbreak.
